This position is funded under an ERC Starting Grant entitled Reducing empiricism in luminescence geochronology: Understanding the origins of luminescence from individual sand grains (639904-RELOS) awarded to Dr Jan-Pieter Buylaert, Associate Professor at this Department. The position is available immediately.

The candidate
We seek an innovative and visionary researcher to investigate the relationships between energy deposited by ionising radiation, number of free charges created per unit energy, and the resulting trapped charge populations in naturally occurring luminescent minerals. The successful candidate is expected to have a broad background in at least one of physics or chemistry, and must have documented experience in experimental solid state physics, preferably in connection with radiation dosimetry and charge movement in insulators.

The candidate will undertake guided research into the interactions of ionising radiation with natural insulators (quartz and feldspar). They will have a strong publication record and an international collaboration network. Experience in the use of radiation-transport and charge-transport models is highly desirable. The proven ability to attract funding from national and international sources would be an advantage.

Place of work
The successful candidate will be based at the joint AU/ Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Nordic Centre for Luminescence Research, as part of a multidisciplinary research and instrumentation group; this joint facility is housed at DTU Nutech, on the Risø Campus near Roskilde, Denmark. They are expected to actively collaborate with other groups from AU and DTU, and with research institutions worldwide.

The Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, has strong research groups within deep Earth processes (geophysics, geochemistry, basin research) and Earth surface processes (quaternary geology and geochronology, surface processes, climate, groundwater/environment) as well as computational Earth Science. It has 21 faculty members and a yearly enrolment of about 50 BSc students.

The Center for Nuclear Technology, Technical University of Denmark, has strong research groups within radiation physics (luminescence dating and dosimetry, medical and industrial dosimetry, neutronics), radioecology and medical applications of radionuclides. DTU Nutech has 27 scientists undertaking research, innovation and education at the M.Sc. and PhD levels.

The place of work is Frederiksborg Alle 339, DK-4000 Roskilde (Risø), and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Start date is as soon as possible.
