Research assistant for a research project in Democratic Innovations in a Green Transition

The IT University of Copenhagen invites applications for a vacant research assistant position (100%) in the Business IT Department within the research project “Democratic Innovations in a Green Transition”.

The research project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and is in collaboration with Department of Political Science and the Faculty of Law, Copenhagen University, and the Danish Board of Technology.

The successful candidate will be employed by September 1, 2021 (or soon thereafter) to February 28, 2022 with potential for a short extension.

The research assistant will be associated with the Technologies in Practice research group at the department, as well as with the Ethos Lab, ITU’s methods lab.

The project
“Democratic Innovations in a Green Transition” is a 3-year research project in collaboration between the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen, and ITU. It examines the impact of Denmark’s climate citizens’ assembly (Klimaborgertinget, organized by the Board of Technology for the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities) on the Danish political system.

The overall research question is: in what way might the assembly strengthen support for green transition policies, and to what extent will it affect existing channels for public debate and democratic decision-making? DIGT aims to answer these questions through a new framework that combines the study of deliberative democracy with affect theory, new materialism, and science and technology studies (STS).

The project is draws on both qualitative and quantitative methods, and it is organized around three subprojects, which together will allow the project to assess how Denmark’s climate assembly will, and can be made to, contribute positively to a national green transition.

The position
The position is part of a subproject that examines the relations between the national climate assembly and green civil society initiatives, such as Extinction Rebellion and Den Grønne Studenterbevægelse.

The applicant is expected to:

  • Design and conduct an online mapping of the landscape of green civil society initiatives in Denmark using digital methods and tools, such as hyphe and gephi, with support from the Ethos Lab.
  • Potentially participate in a qualitative ethnographic investigation into some of the identified organisations.
  • Support other ongoing research activities in the project, such as reviewing literature and transcribing interviews.
  • Participate in project meetings and activities.
  • Be physically present on a regular basis and actively participate in research activities of the Department.

The ideal candidate should

  • Have an interest in questions related to climate change, (political/digital/material/public) participation, qualitative and quali-quant/digital methods and STS
  • Have strong methodological and analytical skills and qualifications
  • Have experience in working with digital methods and ethnography
  • Have strong Danish skills
  • Have at least a finished BSc, but candidates with an MSc are preferred.

The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialization of IT.

Salary
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

Working time is 37 hours per week.
