Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as Research Assistant of mouse developmental biology from September 1st or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as research assistant is limited to a period of one year.

The successful candidate will be part of an exciting new project funded by the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes to investigate the role of neurulation for embryonic development of the pancreas using a combination of methods spanning from whole organ explant culture & microscopy to machine learning. The project is led by assistant professor Pia Nyeng at Department of Science and Environment, section for Molecular and Medical Biology.

Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The Department conducts basic and applied research within mathematics, medical biology, physics, molecular biology, environmental sciences, and chemistry. Bachelor and Master programs are offered within these areas. Research and education within the fields takes place in a collaborative and interdisciplinary university environment also spanning collaboration with the other departments covering social sciences and humanities where relevant. The department is organised in four Sections comprising the research and education activities.

Responsibilities and tasks
The research assistant’s work will include research within mouse developmental biology.

  • Planning and executing laboratory experiments involving:
    • Dissection of internal organs from mouse embryos
    • Explant culture of mouse embryonic organs
    • Immunofluorescent staining
  • Monitor breeding and wellbeing of laboratory mice and genotyping of transgenic mice by PCR
  • Transportation of samples by car
  • Active participation in lab meetings
  • Carry out other relevant duties which may be required from time to time


For the right candidate, additional training and expansion of responsibilities within the field of advanced microscopy, image analysis and teaching/supervision of students is also an option.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent within the biomedical/biological field. We are looking for an inquisitive and motivated colleague who will work closely with the rest of our research team and be able to drive their part of the project independently, after a short introductory period. Training in embryo dissection will be provided, but it is essential that candidates have the following qualifications:
  • FELASA certification (ABD)
  • A driver’s license valid in Denmark
  • Computer proficiency (Word, Excel)
  • A good command of English
  • Documented experimental work experience from academic and/or industrial research within the biomedical/biological field (documented experimental master thesis work will suffice)
  • Committed to ongoing professional development, including a willingness to learn new skills

The ideal candidate should be enterprising, independent and with a high level of attention to detail. Possess good communication skills, be visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:
  • Previous experience with small animal dissection or similar tasks requiring fine motor skills
  • Experience with small animal caretaking and breeding
  • Microscopy experience
  • Documented coursework or research experience within the developmental biology/embryology field

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time. Organisationally you will refer to Dean Susanne Sørensen. On a daily basis, you will refer to assistant professor Pia Nyeng.

The position is according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
