Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Our Copenhagen office is looking for a talented Geotechnical Engineer with minimum 10 years of experience to join us. You will deliver engineering services on projects ranging from large infrastructure projects to high profile buildings including data centres, healthcare facilities and other built environment developments.

The Role
As a senior geotechnical engineer, you will be responsible for undertaking the geotechnical design for projects across a range of sectors both in Scandinavia and abroad. You will be responsible for delivery of projects within budget and timeframes, liaising with multidisciplinary teams and clients, and for the coordination and direction of junior staff. The role also offers opportunities for project management of both geotechnical and multidisciplinary projects.

As part of the Ground Engineering team you will play a role in the development of junior colleagues and promote our culture of technical excellence across the team.

Your key responsibilities would be:

  • Prepare geotechnical desk studies, ground investigation plans & specifications, manage ground investigations, attend site investigation activities and draft Ground Investigation Reports
  • Design a variety of geotechnical structures for both buildings and infrastructure projects and prepare Geotechnical Design Reports, e.g. shallow/deep foundations, gravity or embedded retaining walls, ground improvement works, underground constructions and earthworks
  • Carry out owner-side compliance reviews for Design & Build projects, supervise construction activities and prepare Geotechnical Feedback Reports
  • Ensure the quality of your own work as well as that of your junior colleagues by carrying out checks and following up on the actions arising from technical reviews undertaken by Arup’s specialists
  • Continuously develop your own technical skills as well as that of the team and contribute to the regional Geotechnical Skills Network
  • Be an active part of the geotechnical community in Denmark and abroad by contributing to the national and international societies, writing technical papers, being part of technical committees and presenting at conferences
  • Support the Ground Engineering Team Leader in managing the team.
  • Work collaboratively to ensure production of deliverables to agreed timelines and within budget

    You are a team player and enjoy working in a vibrant international environment on high profile projects. You will have strong technical skills in geotechnical design, construction, and ground investigations. You possess these qualifications:

  • MSc Degree in Civil, Geotechnical or Structural Engineering. A post-graduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, or equivalent, such as a PhD, is an advantage.
  • Achieved professional qualification, typically MICE or MIStructE (or equivalent from a European country)
  • Experience in the field of geotechnical engineering across a range of medium to large scale projects and / or building types for a minimum of 10 years
  • Skillful in a broad range of ground conditions, from soft ground to glacial soils as well as weak and hard rocks, including in a seismic environment
  • Demonstrable strong technical understanding of the design of deep excavations, deep and shallow foundations, earthworks, slope stability, soft ground as well as weak and hard rock conditions, ground treatment, groundwater control,
  • Proven track record of scoping and managing ground investigations as well as interpreting factual data to develop conceptual site models and carry out geotechnical characterisations
  • Thorough understanding of underground construction induce ground movements and building or asset-damage assessment
  • Full command of Eurocode 7
  • Able to quickly develop successful and long-lasting client relationships
  • Good planning, organisational and time management skills. Ability to maintain personal effectiveness particularly when working across several projects
  • Basic knowledge in programming language (such as VBA, Python) is recommended
  • Experience and ability in 3D modelling, scripting, numerical analysis or GIS would be an advantage
  • Basic knowledge in BIM and GIS is recommended
  • Experience in managing and developing junior colleagues
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent communications skills in English and Danish (both written and verbal)
