You will be a team member of our global multidisciplinary team developing state-of-the-art laser systems and accessory devices throughout the complete product lifecycle. This is a hands-on role and along the product journey you will use your problem-solving skills to deliver innovative mechanical solutions to ensure that we stay at the cutting edge of our industry and are able to help our customers develop the next generation of solutions. You will work in our cross-functional teams and be part of developing state of the art products where you can have a deciding role. The Role:

  • Be responsible for mechanical development for laser products throughout the entire product lifecycle.
  • Work closely with optical and electronics engineers on product design.
  • Take ownership of project work packages within product development projects; work with project managers to ensure delivery of solutions within the planned deadlines and budgets.
  • Interact with project and product stakeholders and communicate information clearly across the R&D organization. 
  • Form new and innovative design concepts and take ownership of mechanical system designs.
  • Design precision mechanical and opto-mechanical components for laser products. Create 3D models and 2D drawings of parts and assemblies. 
  • Do initial design verification on 3D printed or machined parts and later final verification on full product prototypes.
  • Support prototype assembly, functional and product qualification tests.
  • Support manufacturing of existing laser products, custom orders, product improvement activities.
  • Ensure product compliance and certification according to industry standards.
  • Work closely with other mechanical engineers of the global R&D Department and of the Systems Integration Group to shape the company’s global mechanical engineering practices. Participate in design reviews, FMEAs.
  • Ensure documentation, Bill of Materials management and release of all work via company PLM systems.
  • Support product manufacturing release.
  • Work with purchasing and supply-chain and directly with suppliers on finding cost effective manufacturing solutions for parts and subassemblies, sourcing new suppliers where required.

 

The Individual:

  • A Bachelor or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A high level of 3D CAD expertise is required. SolidWorks experience is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to take ownership of and lead product development in mechanics.
  • Expertise in mechanical design and drawing standards for injection molded, precision CNC machined and sheet metal parts.
  • Hands-on practical skills and knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing methods.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing and commonly used tools in a mechanical workshop.
  • Plastic, Aluminum and Metal material knowledge
  • Expertise in finite element analysis of stress and deformation  is desirable but not required.
  • Experience in thermal flow simulation is desirable but not required.
  • High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality and reliability.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with management and multi-disciplinary team members.
  • Strong organizational skills to be able to work on multiple concurrent activities.
  • Experience with PLM/Vault systems and Microsoft Excel, Outlook etc.
  • Well-developed analytical abilities; able to question complex information, identify root-causes and effects and deliver inspiring technical solutions.
  • English – both oral and written (English is used throughout the organization for daily communication)

 

  • Experience Required:
  • Greater than 5 years of experience in mechanical design within precision optical, electronic instruments or industrial hi-tech equipment over the complete product life cycle.
  • Experience in design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Experience and knowledge of opto-mechanical components, optical systems or lasers is desirable but not required.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
