Senior Researcher in Ecophysiology of Soil Invertebrates

The Section of Terrestrial Ecology within the Department of Bioscience at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Senior Researcher in the field of ecophysiology of soil invertebrates.

The position is available as soon as possible.

The Position
Focus of the position is on adaptation to climatic stress, ecotoxicology, and how toxicity of environmental contaminants influence the tolerance of climatic stress. Invertebrates are unable to regulate their internal temperature and are hence dependent on a wider set of mechanisms to cope with changing temperature like heat and frost. The candidate will have to contribute to and further develop the on-going research regarding physiological responses and adaptation mechanisms to climatic stress within the context of evolutionary acclimatisation to the existing and future temperature changes that are likely to occur from the Arctic to temperate regions.

The candidate
The applicant is expected to have a PhD degree and a strong professional foundation in ecophysiology and ecotoxicology of soil invertebrates and possess abilities to disseminate research results at a high academic level both in writing and orally. Furthermore, applicants with experience in applied aspects of ecophysiology, for example in biological control of pests or use of invertebrates for feed ingredients, would be preferred. The applicant must have strong analytical skills and experience with experimental work on soil invertebrates, experience with project management, and be able to work independently in larger research groups. Experience from research and development projects involving end-users within industry or other private companies will be an asset.

The Department
The Department of Bioscience is engaged in research programmes, teaching curricula and consultancy covering all major biological sub-disciplines, and we conduct world-class research in the areas of aquatic biology and ecology, Arctic environment and ecosystems, and biodiversity and conservation biology. The Department currently employs approximately 250 academic and technical staff.

The Department holds a strong position in international biodiversity research and is a national leader in research-based consultancy and knowledge exchange on evidence-based and cost effective conservation and management of biodiversity in Denmark. Our research focuses on how ecological framework conditions, historical conditions, natural processes and anthropogenic changes of nature and the environment affect our surrounding biodiversity. We explore the underlying ecological and geographical mechanisms and work on understanding human impact on biodiversity and ecosystems. Particular focus is on how current climate change and other global anthropogenic environmental changes affect biodiversity. We have expertise in plant biodiversity, plant-insect interactions, population ecology, taxonomy, nature conservation and management, eco-toxicology, and critical loads. Our tools are experiments, field observations, GIS, remote sensing, eDNA, risk assessment, risk modelling, decision support systems and ecoinformatics. We study the interactions between plants, animals, fungi, micro-organisms and the surrounding environment. The activities take place at a national and international level with main activities in Denmark and Northern Europe, including the Arctic. Our research builds upon a strong research infrastructure with numerous well-equipped research laboratories run by a highly qualified staff of lab technicians.

The Department of Bioscience plays a leading role in providing advice to the Danish authorities on environmental issues, and we are deeply involved in the national monitoring programme (NOVANA), responsible for developing and revising technical guidelines and for the sampling and analysis of biological parameters, hazardous substances etc. Finally, we are responsible for data reporting to national and international databases. We have easy access to all large environmental databases.

The Department offers a vibrant and informal research environment with longstanding traditions for collaboration with international university partners in the absolute elite and with the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food. The working environment at the Department is based on teamwork and close working relations with developed professional and social network activities among young scientists. The working languages are English and Danish and we welcome applicants from abroad. Read about the Danish work-life balance and the services available when relocating to Aarhus University at www.au.dk/work.

Place of Employment
The Department of Bioscience currently has three work locations; one in Roskilde, one in Silkeborg and one in Kalø. The latter two are located in Jutland and will move to the Aarhus University Campus within the next 2-3 years. The place of employment will be in Silkeborg (Vejlsøvej 25, DK-8600 Silkeborg).

Further information
Further information can be obtained from either professor Martin Holmstrup (phone: +45 8715 8823, e-mail: martin.holmstrup@bios.au.dk) or Head of Section Morten Strandberg (phone: +45 97158837, e-mail: mts@bios.au.dk).

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference
If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
