Senior Researcher (permanent position)

DIIS invites applications for a permanent position as Senior Researcher starting on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position as Senior Researcher is aimed at applicants who have 1) obtained their PhD within the social sciences or humanities, 2) at least 3 years of relevant work experience at Postdoc/Researcher level and 3) qualifications at the level as Associate Professor. The applicant should have proven research and policy experience, preferably in an interdisciplinary context, academic publications within DIIS’ research fields. Furthermore, the applicant must have demonstrated an ability to publish and communicate research results in an honest, transparent and accurate manner to external audiences, in accordance with the Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

The successful applicant must contribute to the thematic and theoretical development of research at DIIS in general and particularly within the relevant DIIS research unit, which the Senior Researcher will join. The institute’s tasks are varied, with a wide-ranging scope of activities, so we expect our staff to be at the forefront of their discipline and have a flexible attitude.

The specific research and analysis field will be finally decided upon in collaboration with the relevant unit coordinator. DIIS’s senior researchers are expected to use 60 percent of their time on research, 20 percent on policy research and ad hoc work, and 20 percent on dissemination, administration and research education (e.g. supervision). Across the various types of tasks, about 20 percent of the time is to be spent on income-generating assignments of relevance to the research field, as external fundraising activities are a collective priority at the institute. This also means that documented results with and a willingness to actively pursue funding for research-based projects, consultancies etc. will be an advantage.

General Information
DIIS is a leading public institute for independent research and analysis of international affairs. We conduct and communicate multidisciplinary research on globalisation, security, development and foreign policy, and within these areas, we aim to be agenda setting in research, policy and public debate. The institute is situated in Copenhagen (Nordhavn) and offers a multifaceted international environment with a focus on professionalism, flexibility and mutual respect amongst all colleagues.

DIIS is a bilingual Danish-English workplace where we attach great importance to skills in written communication and dissemination of knowledge in both languages with equal weighting. It is possible to apply for the position without prior knowledge of Danish, but the successful candidate is expected to learn the language within the first 3 years of employment.

DIIS employs a relatively flat management structure with a high degree of staff participation through a free and open dialogue on the institute’s internal and external issues. It is important that all employees play a proactive and constructive role in the DIIS community. This means that we expect a high level of attendance and involvement in the workplace. At the same time, we show consideration for each other as colleagues and value different perspectives. Furthermore, we allow flexible working hours and a substantial amount of travel activity is to be expected.

The position as Senior Researcher is a permanent position, which will commence on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. Remuneration and other job conditions follow the general agreement between AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) and the Danish Ministry of Finance as well as local collective agreements at DIIS.

All qualified applicants – regardless of national, ethnic or religious background, gender, age or sexual orientation – are encouraged to apply.

The application
An external evaluation committee will assess the qualified applicants.

The application must include:

  • CV and documentation of academic qualifications, including a complete list of publications as well as master’s and PhD diplomas.
  • Up to five central scholarly works must be enclosed – either uploaded electronically or sent by mail in three copies each (see more about this below).
  • Documentation of scientific dissemination (media participation etc.).
  • A statement of no more than 500 words with a description of a research project that makes full use of your research profile within DIIS’ current research priorities and areas – preferably in an interdisciplinary context.
