330083233Postdoc in Atmospheric Complexity and Complex SystemsRobot Convective clouds are known to interact. But how does this interaction structure the atmosphere? And how does it give rise to extreme precipitation? The ERC-funded interdisciplinary Atmospheric Complexity team at Niels Bohr Institute is seeking a creative postdoctoral researcher for 2 years. The team s focus is on the physics of atmospheric self-organization on varying spatio-temporal scales, in particular on the interaction of the convective cloud field and the origin of extreme precipitation in a changing climate. We use methods from non-equilibrium statistical physics, fluid dynamics and geoscience to describe, understand and generalize complex processes in the atmosphere. We offer a creative, international and strongly interdisciplinary work environment. Applicants are encouraged to present their own ideas on self-organization in convection within their application. You will be able to propose new theoretical approaches, as well as design and analyze numerical experiments. The scientific methodology is to idealize atmospheric convection in high-resolution large-eddy simulations and exploit high-resolution observational data, to gain conceptually new understanding on the mechanisms of convective self-organization and the development of extreme precipitation, e.g. flash floods or meso-scale organization. You will be working as part of the Atmospheric Complexity team and the complex systems community at Niels Bohr Institute. You will have the opportunity to make strong research contributions within the field of convective self-organization, but will also be free to explore adjacent areas within complex systems research. You should have a Ph.D. in theoretical or applied physics, geo atmospheric science, applied mathematics or a related field. You should be interested in building mathematical models of complex systems. Solid computational and mathematical skills will be necessary. Especially curiosity, personal drive, as well as strong social and communication skills are expected. Previous experience in climate research is not necessary, however, some prior experience in fluid dynamics will be useful. Further information on the atmospheric complexity team is available at http: atmospheric-complexity.nbi.ku.dk. Inquiries about the position can be made to Jan O. Haerter (haerter@nbi.ku.dk). Background The Center was established in 2010 through a generous, unrestricted grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF). The vision of the Center is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms of metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. The Center has around 200 employees from all over the world. We moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower in summer 2017. In 2018, the Center obtained new strategic funding from NNF to further expand and establish develop five enabling biology and technology platforms in support of the new research strategy.
