Tenure-track in Infection biology and epidemiology of plant pathogens

Aarhus University, Science and Technology, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position at the Department of Agroecology, starting no later than January 1st 2021.

Research areas
The successful candidate will be part of a plant pathology research environment with a focus on prevention and control of plant diseases in agriculture and horticulture. You will be part of a team working mainly on population biology, epidemiology and host responses in relation to resistance to biotrophic pathogens such as powdery mildews and rusts affecting cereals and grasses.

The successful candidate should take part in research within:

  • Pathogen biology and epidemiology including factors affecting virulence and aggressiveness
  • Host- and non-host resistance responses to plant pathogens
  • Influence of environmental factors on host-pathogen interactions at macroscopic and microscopic levels.
The research team, also known as the ‘Global Rust Reference Center’, consists of 10-12 scientists, technicians and PhD students (www.wheatrust.org). We have several nationally and internationally focused projects mainly within population biology of rust fungi, but we also work with other plant pathogens affecting mainly cereals and grasses.

The successful candidate should have expertise in population biology and host resistance responses for rust and powdery mildew fungi and an interest in using histopathological techniques for studying the infection biology and interactions between host and pathogen.

Qualifications
  • PhD degree and minimum 4 years of onwards research experience within plant pathology
  • Documented research experience within plant disease epidemiology and host-pathogen interaction studies for crop pathogens, preferably rust and powdery mildew fungi
  • Documented experience in advanced microscopic techniques
  • Pedagogic training and teaching experience at MSc and PhD level
  • Experience in international research collaboration and networking
  • Interest and skills in scientific communication
The Department of Agroecology
At the Department of Agroecology we study interactions between soil, plants, animals, humans and the environment in different agroecosystems for the production of food, feed, biomaterials and energy. Thus, we contribute to both fundamental knowledge generation and the attainment of sustainable production systems via state-of-the-art research, contracted policy advice, and education. We offer state-of-the-art laboratory, green house, semi-field and field scale research facilities, advanced computing capacities as well as an extensive national and international researcher network. Technical Sciences Tenure Track

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
