Tenure Track Researcher in Degradation of Micropollutants

The Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University, Risø Campus, Denmark invites applications for a tenure track researcher position in molecular microbial ecology to strengthen and expand the research capability, and the research-based activities at the department. The position is to be filled as soon as possible, subject to negotiation.

The Department of Environmental Science
The Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling to social science, geography, economics and policy analysis. Both basic and applied research are conducted on some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 140 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. The researcher will be affiliated with the Section of Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology. The unit employs approximately 30 staff members, focusing on microorganisms as providers of ecosystem services (e.g. C-sequestration, contaminant degradation) in soil and groundwater, Arctic/ice surface microbiota and its influence on climate and ice melting, use of eDNA for environmental monitoring of microorganisms and microfauna, aeromicrobiology, presence/phylogeny of virulence factors in bacteria, sustainable cycling of resources (circular bioeconomy). The section offers access to well-equipped molecular microbiology laboratories with Illumina DNA-sequencing platforms (MiSeq and NextSeq), as well as a new advanced Nanopore sequencer. New advanced servers are available for doing bioinformatics analysis. The section share coffee-machine and breakfast room with the section for environmental chemistry and toxicology with great collaborative opportunities within advanced chemical analysis including proteomics and metabolomics.

Description of the position
The selected candidate is expected to:

  • Develop the research area of microbial degradation of organic micropollutants in soil and groundwater
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary scientific collaboration in the area of bioremediation; in the department and with other departments at AU
  • Build up own externally funded research within the research areas of the section
  • Contribute to ongoing research projects in environmental genetics and bioinformatics and to establish his/her own research program within the area of remediation of organic micropollutants in the environment, using biomolecular methodology (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics)
  • Take responsibility to maintain, support and to further develop the sequencing facilities at the department
  • Contribute to the advisory work for relevant public bodies in Denmark and abroad
  • Contribute to the teaching of graduate courses and to the development of a new curriculum in environmental science.

Qualification requirements
  • The position requires a background in molecular microbial ecology in relation to the research fields covered by the section
  • Applicants should as a minimum hold scientific qualifications equivalent to the Ph.D. graduate level and have 2-3 years of post-graduate research showing evidence of a strong and ambitious research-oriented profile and an emerging publication record
  • Experience with sequence-based analysis of microbial communities, including Next Generation Sequencing and bioinformatics analysis would be an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Some teaching experience within microbiology at a university master’s level as well as (co-) supervision of master’s and Ph.D. students is expected.

In addition, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate the potential to be a role model for values of equality, diversity and inclusion. The position, therefore, requires a highly motivated scientist who is comfortable working in teams and believes in creating an attractive work-life balance in her/his research group.

The position The candidate will be expected to conduct experimental research on protein powder microstructure using techniques such as small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, light scattering and allied methods of colloid and nanoscience. The research project is in collaboration with the protein production site to investigate the structure physical property relationships and to understand how they are related to the different processing steps. The quality of pharmaceutical formulations relies on the ingredients and various steps in the production, including the production of the API, the active pharmaceutical ingredient. The APIs produced at Novo Nordisk A S, including insulin, are produced as lyophilized powders. The project will investigate different characteristics of the protein powder and relate to the variation of parameters in the final steps of the manufacture of the API. The goal is to enable direct process control in the API process targeted to ensure ease and robustness of the manufacture of the final pharmaceutical formulation. The position is a 2 years postdoctoral employment. Start date is 1st October 2019 or according to agreement. If so, a postdoctoral researcher position is currently available in the Biophysical Characterisation in Bagsværd, Denmark.

 

About the department

The Department Site Support Improvements is part of Diabetes Finished Products manufacturing Development in PS Novo Nordisk. The department is organised in 6 teams with a total of 70 employees. The department is responsible for supporting production sites around the world.

 

The position

The candidate will be expected to conduct experimental research on protein powder microstructure using techniques such as small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, light scattering and allied methods of colloid and nanoscience. The research project is in collaboration with the protein production site to investigate the structure physical property relationships and to understand how they are related to the different processing steps. The quality of pharmaceutical formulations relies on the ingredients and various steps in the production, including the production of the API, the active pharmaceutical ingredient. The APIs produced at Novo Nordisk A/S, including insulin, are produced as lyophilized powders. The project will investigate different characteristics of the protein powder and relate to the variation of parameters in the final steps of the manufacture of the API. The goal is to enable direct process control in the API process targeted to ensure ease and robustness of the manufacture of the final pharmaceutical formulation. 

The position is a 2 years postdoctoral employment.

Start date is 1st October 2019 or according to agreement.

 

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have a PhD, or will soon finish their PhD, in Engineering or Science with expertise in protein science and/or scattering methods, as well as be familiar with and interested in protein processing and production. A relevant scientific disciplinary background are Soft M-atter Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Colloid or Physical Chemistry and Protein Crystallography or similar. You have established an excellent track record and you have an in- depth knowledge about physical properties of proteins, solid and in solution behavior, stability including chemical and physical characterisation. You are experienced in characterisation methods based on various scattering techniques such as DLS, SLS and SAXS and a fundamental understanding of the underlying physical principles. 

As a person you are curious and dynamic, with a positive attitude to new ideas and people. You are committed to your tasks and reach your goals and have a keen interest in understanding the science behind the drug development process. You collaborate well with people at all levels. You are cheerful and show a positive attitude towards challenges. You take the initiative for driving your projects and are able to stay on top of things in a dynamic working environment.
