Two postdoctoral positions in field-based research and modelling of permafrost-affected ecosystems at Center for Permafrost, University of Copenhagen (Denmark)

Center for Permafrost (CENPERM) at University of Copenhagen is recruiting two postdoctoral associates to work with field-based ecosystem manipulations and process-based ecosystem modelling with a focus on soil physics and biogeochemical processes.

Both positions are for two years starting from 1 November 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

CENPERM is a Center of Excellence financed by the Danish National Research Foundation (2012-2023) aiming to integrate multidisciplinary research of biogeochemical and physical processes in a “climate-vegetation-soil-microorganism-permafrost” approach in transects across the major climate zones of Greenland. The ambition is to improve the quantification and predictions of changes in element pools and fluxes relevant for Arctic ecosystems.

Research project
More than eight years of data collected by CENPERM in the Arctic is now available and ready for additional model-data comparison and upscaling, to extend findings in time and space and thereby provide area-based estimates of changes. Recent manipulations include winter warming and year-round measurements of important subsurface greenhouse gas production and exchange with the atmosphere.
The two postdocs can expect to work within a well-established research group and take part in co-supervising of PhD-students and take lead in database management.

Qualifications
Candidates are expected to have qualifications and interests in more than one of the following topics:

  • Field-based ecosystem manipulations experiments and monitoring of greenhouse gas production
  • Measurements of subsurface and snow gas concentrations, diffusion and greenhouse gas fluxes
  • Process-based models to simulate changes in climate-soil-plant-microbial characteristics
  • Structural equation modelling
We specifically seek candidates with documented knowledge and interest in field-based experimental work and/or process-based modelling of the terrestrial environment, with hands-on experience using specific models - preferable with experience with Arctic ecosystems, while this is not a requirement. The candidates are expected to be familiar with data management and statistical analyses of experimental data. Good English communication skills, both oral and written, are expected.

Candidates should have a PhD degree preferably in environmental sciences, biogeochemistry or soil sciences with documented research in soil-plant interactions, preferably linked to gas production/transport.

Salary and terms of employment
The place of work will be in Copenhagen. The position is for 24 months starting on 1 November 2021 or as early as possible thereafter.

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 440.935 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 75.399). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

How to apply
The applications must be in English, submitted electronically and include:

  • Letter of application
  • Curriculum vita, incl. education, experience, previous employments, language skills and other relevant skills (max 5 pages).
  • Detailed outline of proposed research, including research questions and methods (max 5 pages)
  • Diplomas (Master and PhD degree or equivalent)
  • Complete publication list, highlighting the 3 most important ones
  • Separate reprints of 3 particularly relevant papers
  • Two letters of recommendation.
The deadline for applications is 1 October 2021, 23:59 GMT +2.
