Two-year post-doc position in informatics, genomics and translational research

We seek a motivated and independent candidate for a two-year post-doc position in colorectal cancer genomics and translational research, available at Dept. of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health, Aarhus University and physically located at Dept. of Molecular Medicine (MOMA), Aarhus University Hospital. The position is available from 1 August 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project:
The project concerns the following two clinical situations: (1) early detection of individuals with high risk of having cancer, and (2) detection of patients with high risk of disease recurrence after treatment for cancer. In both cases the approach is detection of tumor DNA circulating in blood. Detection of tumor DNA in the blood is a very strong indication that the donor has cancer/residual-disease. In the project we apply three different methods to detect circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). Previously, we and our collaborators have published high profiled proof of principle papers of the methods in the well-esteemed journals Science Translational Medicine (PMID: 28814544), Nature Medicine (in press) and Nature (PMID: 31142840).

With this project we take the methods to the next level, and seek to further document their clinical utility by applying them to large cohorts of clinical samples. The successful applicant will be either the driving force, or a central player, dependent on his/her experience, in the analysis of the following three novel next generation sequencing (NGS) datasets: (1) Tumor informed ultra-deep targeted NGS data from pre- and post-surgery blood samples of 300 colorectal cancer patients (sequencing depth: 5.000-30.000x unique coverage). (2) Tumor informed whole genome sequencing of more than 1,300 serially collected plasma samples from 180 patients (sequencing depth: 30x coverage). The plasma was collected before surgery and at regular intervals after surgery for up to three years. (3) Non-tumor informed shallow whole genome sequencing of 1,800 plasma samples from 600 colorectal cancer patients and 1,200 healthy controls (Sequencing depth: ~1x coverage).

A major part of the successful applicants work will involve bioinformatics analyses of plasma, tumor and germline DNA sequencing data. Candidates with expertise in programming, statistics or informatics are encouraged to apply also if they have no experience with sequencing, cancer or molecular biology. Also candidates with expertise in Molecular biology are encouraged to apply, particular if they have some experience in programming and statistics.

Your competences
We are looking for a highly motivated applicant that have or are about to obtain a PhD in a relevant subject, which could be bioinformatics, statistics, programming, medicine, molecular biology or similar.

Furthermore we are looking for candidates with several of the following professional and personal qualifications:

You are rich in initiative and have a strong motivation for research. You have experience with R, Python or similar programming languages and experience in medical statistical data analysis (using STATA, R or similar). You have published peer-reviewed articles in international journals and have research experience in cancer genomics, and/or epigenomics. You have knowledge about colorectal cancer and/or cancer biology. Furthermore, you have good collaborative skills as well as good communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.
