Two-year postdoc - Unravelling the drivers of nitrous oxide emissions from streams

The Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 2-year postdoc position in biogeochemistry. The successful candidate will help overcome key knowledge gaps about how the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide is produced in streams.

The position will be part of the project DrivNos funded by the independent research fund Denmark (DFF) under the Green transition call.

The position is for 2 years and is available from July 1, 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description
The project DrivNOS aims to understand how nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from streams, and the underlying processes driving them, are altered by nitrogen (N) pollution and soil properties, particularly iron content and pH. Streams have been highlighted as significant but poorly constrained sources of N2O, a greenhouse gas ~300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. The project consists in conducting field and lab experiments to identify potential N2O emission hotspots in streams located in contrasting catchments (nature areas and intensive agriculture), characterise production pathways emissions and determine how N pollution interacts with iron content and pH to alter the emission of N2O from streams.

The project includes fieldwork in Denmark and research stays at partner institutions in the Netherlands and Germany. The candidate is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead the development of at least two high-quality papers based on the project. Further, the candidate should contribute to the project’s public outreach, as well as collaborate with other team members, including students, sharing skills, and help solve problems in her/his area of expertise.

Your profile
Applicants must have PhD degree (or have submitted their PhD thesis for assessment before the application deadline) in biogeochemistry, biology or related fields. Experience with greenhouse gas measurements and analysis (closed chamber, headspace techniques, gas chromatography) would be highly beneficial. Programming experience in R, Python is a great advantage. Research experience about aquatic ecosystems will also be an advantage. The successful candidate is expected to have strong collaborative skills, proven abilities to publish at a high international level, and must be proficient in English.

Project PI researcher Joachim Audet, Bioscience, Silkeborg will be the main advisor. The postdoc will be affiliated to the section of catchment analysis and environmental protection.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
