The university seeks to appoint a 5 year professor of clinical social medicine (50 %) with special focus on social determinants and social and functional ability consequences of health. The professorship is expected to commence on 1 October 2024.

The position belongs to the Section of Social Medicine which is an interdisciplinary research unit with a strong expertise in social determinants of health across the life course. The section continuously contributes to advancing the understanding of factors that hamper social equality in health through novel empirical studies that build on solid theories and advanced state of the art methods with a focus on both qualitative and quantitative methods and multimethod approaches.

Job description

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination. The professorship aims to strengthen the area of research in social medicine and must contribute substantially to the integration of the theoretical and clinical social medicine.
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination. Responsibilities will consist of research-based teaching and supervision of pre-graduate students. The professor is expected to act as course leader of the course in clinical social medicine and to ensure the implementation of clinical social medicine in the present and new study plan in medicine at the Faculty.
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers The professorship must contribute to the development of a research environment which bridge the research at Section of Social Medicine and the clinical departments of social medicine.
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Research-based public-sector consultancy may be required
Qualification requirements
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each applicant must be able to:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Provide research-based teaching
The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 5 years. The average weekly working hours are 18.5 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

Application procedure

The dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post.
