The Danish School of Education, Aarhus University, invites applications for a position as an assistant professor in adult education. The assistant professorship is a full-time and fixed-term three-year position starting on 1 November 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter subject to mutual agreement. The position will be based at the Department of Education Studies.

Job descriptionAs an assistant professor in adult education, you will contribute to the building of a regarded national and international profile of the Danish School of Education in the field of adult education. You will conduct independent and collaborative empirical research on adult education and learning, adult education institutions, workplace learning, assessment and use of prior learning, and the interplay between formal education and workplace practice. In continuity of your research, you will communicate research-based knowledge to practice fields, media and policymakers, and you will play an active role in the development of the newly established research programme on vocational training and adult education. You will furthermore teach and supervise students at Bachelor’s, Master’s and professional Master’s level, including coordinating course modules. Finally, you are expected to engage in research grant applications and international network consolidation during your period of employment as an assistant professor.

Your tasks will mainly include:
  • Research of advanced and international quality, published in highprofile international and (if relevant) national journals
  • Development of national and international research collaborations
  • Researchbased communication to practice fields, media and policymakers at a national level
  • Development of grant applications together with internal and external partners
  • Researchbased teaching and development of teaching on the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in education science as well as the professional Master’s degree programme in adult education
  • Supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s and professional Master’s degree students
  • Active involvement in the academic and social environment at the Department of Education Studies.

QualificationsAppointment as an assistant professor/researcher requires academic qualifications at PhD level. At the Department of Education Studies, we welcome a broad range of academic backgrounds, including education, sociology, anthropology, psychology, history, political science, organisation studies and working life studies. Besides outlining how your academic background is relevant for the position, your application should demonstrate a relevant research profile within at least one of the following areas:
  • adult learning, including formal, nonformal and informal learning
  • practice learning
  • workplace learning and workplace practice
  • development of adults’ competences and skills
  • adult education programmes
  • adult education institutions.
Your application should furthermore display your research plans and plans for the development of your academic profile in relation to these areas, as well as your empirical, methodological and theoretical research contributions and interests.


About the Danish School of Education
The Danish School of Education at Aarhus University is Denmark’s largest centre for research and teaching in the fields of education, didactics and learning, with approximately 240 full-time researchers, including 80 PhD students, and 4,500 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students. The school’s activities are characterised by a high degree of interdisciplinarity and close interaction with society, including businesses, organisations, government agencies and institutions, both in Denmark and abroad.

The position is based at the Department of Education Studies, where you will find colleagues working with a broad range of empirical, methodological and theoretical sources both within specialised research fields and across interdisciplinary research fields. Our Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes focus on historical and contemporary issues related to education, including digital technologies, sustainability, diversity and dominant forms of organisation, management, governance and administration of education. The research environments at the department include researchers working with practice learning, work-based learning and lifelong learning.
