The position
As Department Manager, you will lead a team of innovative, driven and talented scientists addressing Skeletal Muscle or Islet related questions supporting projects across the Diabetes and Obesity portfolios. You will be expected to communicate priorities, provide scientific guidance, and drive and support change to improve a complex and growing organisation. You will join a newly established and highly collaborative leadership team within metabolic diseases research, responsible for executing and delivering on our Diabetes and Obesity strategies. With your solid background in leadership and metabolic disease, together with the team you will define and execute the operational strategy within Skeletal Muscle or Islet Biology to deliver and drive novel targets in the portfolio. Some of your key responsibilities will include: Working collaboratively across the organisation to support project needs Supporting and empowering your team in driving target identification, validation and maturation using state-of-the art methodologies and disease knowledge within diabetes or metabolic disease Ensuring scientific rigor in the department's activities, success of line of business support and strong collaboration across R&ED Being accountable for creating a diverse and inclusive team Direct line management of a growing team that supports a global organisation Guiding and mentoring scientists and technical staff to support individual development Identifying external opportunities e.g., new technologies, platforms data innovations to support target ID and maturation Qualifications You hold a Ph.D. degree in human biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or closely related discipline, with 8+ years of experience working with research, biotech, or industry within the area of Obesity and/or Diabetes. Prior leadership experience is required. To be successful in this position you have: A proven leadership track record along with a track record of internationally recognised excellence in relevant human disease physiology within cardiometabolic disease Strong understanding of target identification and validation Experience working in a dynamic environment and promoting collaboration and innovative approaches in drug discovery Experience managing teams/departments in an academic and/or pharma industry setting Experience in people management, mentoring and ensuring well-being of your team in a complex and high paced environment On a personal level, you are result-oriented, impactful, and flexible with strong presentation, collaboration and communication skills. About the area Metabolic Disease Research is part of the Obesity, Diabetes and MASH Therapy Area in Global Drug Discovery, Novo Nordisk A/S. Currently, the area consists of ~40 employees across 3 departments.
