The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as a research assistant in gene editing as per 1 June 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position for 2 years.

The department of Biomedicine prioritises diversity and a good work environment, as this is a prerequisite for groundbreaking research. In a diverse and international research environment, dedicated employees are looking to generate new knowledge within biomedical research areas such as infection and inflammation, membranes, neuroscience and personalised medicine. The Department of Biomedicine provides research-based teaching of the highest quality and is responsible for a large part of the medical degree programme. Academic staff contribute to the teaching. English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The department employs approx. 500 people from all over the world, and they make use of the department's modern laboratory-, core- and animal facilities. The Department of Biomedicine focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with business and industry, and numerous researchers from the department have established companies to develop new medicinal treatments founded in professional scientific basic research. About the research group

The research group is led by Associate Professor Rasmus O. Bak. The group specializes in genetic engineering using various CRISPR/Cas platforms, and we focus on applying these for gene therapy and the development of novel cell therapies. The research group is based in the new Skou Building in the heart of the Aarhus University campus. For more information on the research group, please visit our homepage.

Your job responsibilities

As research assistant in gene editing, your primary tasks are to participate in and support ongoing research efforts in developing novel gene editing strategies to correct genetic variants that cause immunodeficiencies. More specifically, the project involves STAT3 Hyper IgE Syndrome. In your daily work, you will have a close interaction with competent colleagues that work on similar types of projects.

Your main tasks will consist of:
  • Research activities including basic molecular biology techniques such as CRISPR/Cas design, plasmid cloning, in vitro mRNA transcription, RNA/DNA purification, cell culture with cell lines and primary blood cells, electroporation, multi-color flow cytometry, droplet digital PCR, and DNA sequencing. More advanced techniques such as viral vector production and mouse experiments will also be part of the research project.
  • Analysis, interpretation, and reporting of laboratory data
  • Oral and written dissemination of research outcomes
  • Contribution to general laboratory maintenance and tasks
You will be under daily supervision by group leader Rasmus O. Bak, and you will formally report to the Head of Department Thomas G. Jensen.

Your competences

You have an educational background in biomedical research and experience in CRISPR/Cas methods and with the above-mentioned research methods. You should be able to work independently with an outreaching and problem-solving mindset. As a person, you are structured, have good interpersonal skills, you function well within a dynamic group environment, you are friendly, helpful, and able to contribute to a good work environment.

We work in a highly international environment, and we expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.
